Back pain at night · Riverdale, NJ
It didn’t used to wake you up.
Now it does.
Back pain that interrupts sleep is further along than pain that only shows up when you move. It is also something we treat every week. Here is what it means, and what we do about it.
What it means
Night pain is a stage, not a mystery.
During the day, movement keeps changing the load on your spine, and the rest of your life keeps your attention. At night both of those stop. Sustained positions let irritated tissue stiffen, and the same problem that was an annoyance at 2 pm can wake you at 2 am.
That is why we treat sleep interruption as useful information, not just a bad night. It usually means the problem has moved from occasional to persistent, and persistent problems respond best to an exam and a plan, not more waiting.
What we do about it
First an exam, then the right tool. All under one roof.

Questions patients ask
Night pain, answered plainly.
Why is my back pain worse at night?
During the day, movement keeps changing how load sits on the spine, so no one position has time to aggravate the problem. At night, sustained positions let irritated joints and discs stiffen and swell, which makes the same problem more noticeable. Pain that reliably shows up at night usually means the underlying issue has become persistent.
Should I see someone for back pain that wakes me up?
Yes. Pain that interrupts sleep is a marker that the problem has progressed from occasional to persistent, and an exam can identify the source. At NJBack no referral is needed, and most patients are seen within 48 hours, often same day.
Can a chiropractor help with pain that wakes me up at night?
Chiropractic care treats the common mechanical sources of night pain, including joint restriction, disc irritation, and muscle guarding. Dr. Atzmon examines first, then treats with adjusting, spinal decompression, laser, or shockwave depending on what the exam shows. The goal is a spine that lets you sleep, not a standing appointment forever.
Do I need a referral or an imaging study first?
No referral is needed to be seen at NJBack. Dr. Atzmon examines every patient before treating, and if imaging is appropriate he will say so and coordinate it. Benefits are checked before your visit so you know where you stand with your plan.
