Blue Cross from any state · Riverdale, NJ
Your Blue Cross card works here.
Even from out of state.
Blue Cross Blue Shield is not one company. It is a federation of independent local plans, and every one of them participates in a program called BlueCard. That program is why your out-of-state Blue plan is in-network at this office.
How BlueCard works
One contract with Horizon. Every Blue plan follows it.
NJBack holds a contract with Horizon, the New Jersey Blue plan. Because every Blue plan participates in BlueCard, members of any other Blue plan are treated as in-network here and are billed at the rate we negotiated with Horizon.
So Anthem, Regence, Highmark, Premera, Wellmark, CareFirst, Florida Blue, Empire, Independence, Excellus, and the rest all work at this office. So does the Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program.

Questions patients ask
BlueCard, answered plainly.
Is my out-of-state Blue Cross plan in-network in New Jersey?
Yes. Every Blue Cross Blue Shield plan participates in BlueCard. Because NJBack holds a contract with Horizon, the New Jersey Blue plan, members of any other Blue plan are treated as in-network here and are billed at the rate we negotiated with Horizon.
Does the Blue Cross Federal Employee Program work here?
Yes. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program participates in BlueCard like the state plans do, so federal employees and their covered family members are in-network at this office.
I am on a parent’s plan from another state. Can I be seen?
Yes. A dependent on a policy issued in another state is covered by the same BlueCard arrangement. Bring your card to the first visit, and we check your benefits before your visit so you know where you stand.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Your insurance card and a photo ID. Benefits are checked before your visit, no referral is needed, and most patients are seen within 48 hours.
