Posture Correction in Riverdale, NJ

Fixing the position that keeps causing the pain, with Dr. Jack A. Atzmon, DC.

Your posture is not a habit, it is a load problem

Hours at a desk and years of looking down at a phone pull the head forward, round the shoulders, and stiffen the upper back. Reminding yourself to sit up straight lasts about a minute.

That is because posture is held by tissue, not willpower, and tissue has adapted to the position you spend the most time in.

Why does bad posture cause pain?

Because of leverage. Your head weighs about a dozen pounds sitting over your shoulders. Move it a few inches forward and the muscles at the base of your neck are holding several times that, all day.

That constant load produces the familiar set: neck tension, headaches, aching between the shoulder blades, and shoulders that fatigue by afternoon.

How does Dr. Atzmon correct posture?

He starts by measuring where you actually are, assessing how you hold your head, shoulders, and spine both at rest and during the movements you make all day, then identifying which of them is driving it.

From there: adjustments to restore motion where the spine has stiffened, soft tissue work on what has shortened, and specific strengthening for what has gone weak. Posture changes when the tissue changes, not when you remember to correct it.

Is my posture a habit, or is something structural going on?

Most adult posture problems are adaptations to load and habit, and adaptations run in both directions. Those change.

Some do not, and that distinction matters. Posture is sometimes the first visible sign of scoliosis. Uneven shoulders, one hip sitting higher, a shoulder blade that stands out more on one side: those get written off as slouching for years. Dr. Atzmon screens for it, because a curve treated as a habit does not respond to posture work.

If it is scoliosis, curve bracing is handled through our sister practice NJ Curve Care. For postural bracing short of that, we fit braces here in this office. Either way you will be told plainly which one you have.

How soon can I be seen, and will insurance cover it?

Same day in most cases, and we are open Saturday mornings. No referral is needed.

We are in network with most major New Jersey carriers. We verify your benefits before your visit and go over what to expect, so nothing about the cost is a surprise from us.
