Pain that spreads · Riverdale, NJ

It started in your back.
Now it is traveling.

A second sore spot is usually not a second problem. It is your body compensating for the first one. Here is how the chain works, and how we stop it at the source.

What it means

One problem, wearing two masks.

When one part of the spine hurts, you move differently without deciding to. Other joints and muscles pick up work they were not built for, and eventually they complain too. Patients feel it as pain that travels: back to hip, back to neck, neck to shoulder.

Chasing each new sore spot one at a time misses the point. The job of the exam is to find the original source, treat it, and let the compensations unwind.

Questions patients ask

Traveling pain, answered plainly.

Why is my back pain spreading to my neck or hips?

Pain changes how you move, usually without you noticing. Other joints and muscles then carry load they were not built for, and over time they become sore themselves. This compensation pattern is the most common reason pain seems to travel from the back to the hip, neck, or shoulder.

Is pain that spreads serious?

Spreading soreness most often reflects compensation rather than something new, and it responds to treating the original source. It is still worth an exam, because the pattern tells the examiner where to look, and because treating the source early keeps the chain short.

Can a chiropractor find where the pain actually starts?

That is what the exam is for. Dr. Atzmon is trained in both chiropractic and osteopathic techniques, examines the whole chain rather than just the sore spot, and treats the source so the compensating areas can settle down.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No referral is needed to be seen at NJBack. Dr. Atzmon examines every patient before treating, and benefits are checked before your visit so you know where you stand with your plan.
