Back Bracing That Takes the Load Off a Painful Spine

A fitted medical brace reduces the pressure your spine carries all day, whether the source is a disc, a joint, or years of wear. Dr. Jack A. Atzmon, DC has fitted more than 2,000 of them since January 2024, here in Riverdale, NJ.

Take the load off the spine and the pain changes

Your lower spine carries the weight of everything above it, every hour you are upright. When a disc, a joint, or a worn segment is already irritated, that weight keeps it irritated. It is why the pain tracks with your day: worse by evening, worse after a long drive, worse the moment you bend or lift.

A fitted medical brace moves part of that weight off the painful segment. Less load means less pressure on what is already inflamed, which is the whole reason the device exists.

How does a back brace actually take pressure off the spine?

By building pressure inside the abdomen so your torso carries some of the load your spine is carrying now. The medical code for the device, L0631, states it plainly: rigid front and back panels running up to the T-9 vertebra, producing “intracavitary pressure to reduce load on the intervertebral discs.”

Rigid is the operative word. Panels have to hold their shape against your body to shift load at all, which is why this is a professional-grade medical device and why it has to be fitted to you rather than bought.

Does my condition need a back brace?

You do not need a herniated disc to benefit. These are what Dr. Atzmon fits braces for. Any of them sound like you?

  • Back pain that keeps returning no matter how long you rest it
  • Pain that spikes when you bend, lift, stand, or sit too long
  • A disc herniation or bulge
  • Arthritis, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease
  • Pain that travels into the buttock or down the leg
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot
  • A back that has never been the same since an injury or surgery

All of them share one thing: a spine carrying more load than the painful part can tolerate. That is precisely what the brace relieves.

Why does a back brace have to be fitted by a doctor?

Because the device is only half of it. The other half is four decisions Dr. Atzmon makes with you in the room:

  • Selection. Different designs load the spine differently. Yours depends on your condition and your build.
  • Sizing. Not a waist measurement. The panels must sit at the right height on your spine.
  • Shaping. The rigid panels are bent to the contour of your back.
  • Positioning. Where it sits on your torso changes how much relief you get from the same device.

Dr. Atzmon has fitted more than 2,000 Aspen braces since January 2024. Volume is how those four decisions get made right the first time, and it is why two patients with the same diagnosis get different results from the identical brace. It is the half no purchase can replace.

Can I be examined, fitted, and braced in one visit?

Yes, and you do not need a referral or an outside prescription. As a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Atzmon examines you, determines medical necessity, writes the documentation, and fits the brace himself.

Braces are stocked here, so most patients walk out wearing one. The usual route is three appointments across several weeks.

Will my insurance cover a back brace in New Jersey?

Usually. New Jersey requires the plans it regulates to cover medically necessary orthotic appliances. Documented chronic back pain qualifies, and so do a disc herniation, sciatica, or a compressed nerve. You do not need a dramatic diagnosis. You need pain that is real, ongoing, and written down.

That documentation is the part patients cannot do for themselves, and it is the part that decides whether a claim is paid. Dr. Atzmon writes it as part of your exam.

And when you are examined and fitted in the same visit, there is no additional copay for the brace. Only your deductible applies. That is not a courtesy we extend, it is how the benefit is written.

We are in network with most major New Jersey carriers. We verify your benefits before your visit and go over what to expect, so nothing about the cost is a surprise from us.

I already tried a back brace online. Why didn’t it help?

Because it was a support, not a brace. Elastic, wraps the waist, built for minor everyday soreness. Read the packaging again and you will see it never claimed to treat sciatica, a pinched nerve, or a herniated disc. It legally could not.

It was the wrong device for your problem, and nothing about it was fitted to you. A real brace is still available to you, and you have not tried one yet.
